Alice is a Spirit, who appears as a hedgehog, found in Spiritfarer. She can be found at Mount Toroyama. You must complete The Coziest Cottage quest in order for her to join you on your boat.

About[]

Event[]

Alice introduces the Nebula Pillbug event, allowing the player to collect Nebula Fibre. After Alice visits the Everdoor, the event can be initiated by interacting with the door of Alice's Cottage.

Life[]

A stay-at-home mom, she spent most of her adulthood looking after her children and taking care of her family’s domestic life. Engaging with Alice meant doing so of your own volition, as she would never dare impose herself. However, she loved fashion, travelling, and Swedish romance novels, which she slowly reveals to Stella. Unfortunately, as she grew older, she started showing signs of dementia.

In Stella’s life, she represents a turning point in her vocation as a nurse. Alice was the first patient to die in Stella’s care, an experience that reaffirmed her will to work in end-of-life care.[1]

Game Notes[]

  • Because the Rock Destroyer upgrade requires two spirit flowers, Alice is one of two spirits who immediately follow Gwen to the Everdoor.
  • She gives away free kitchen-made food along with Orchard harvesting, making her easy to keep her fed with foods she likes (though bear in mind that you still have to bake her a Veggie-pot Pie as it is one of the rarer Old-Fashioned foods that she can yield
  • At the later tasks her house has to be rightmost corner of the boat

Trivia[]

  • Alice is based on the grandmother of one of the game's team members, whose passing sadly coincided with the beginning of Spiritfarer's development.[1]

Artbook Entry[]

Soft spoken and unobtrusive, Alice is the kind of person who prefers keeping quiet over inconveniencing someone else. A stay-at-home mom, she spent most of her adulthood looking after her children and taking care of her family’s domestic life. Engaging with Alice meant doing so of your own volition, as she would never dare impose herself.

The timidness of her character was by design, as we knew it would contrast well against the personality of other passengers the player would likely already have on board, like Atul, Gwen or Bruce. Through her requests, we wanted to show her slowly opening up to Stella, overcoming a shyness that would often hide her true passions (fashion, travels, Swedish romance novels).

Based on a team member’s grandmother whose passing coincided with the beginning of Spiritfarer’s production, we also wanted to address the pain of slowly losing a loved one through sickness and age. It’s something most of us go through, often first via the loss of a grandparent, and Alice’s departure was meant to evoke that experience, and hopefully, offer catharsis.

As for her place in Stella’s life, she represents a turning point in her vocation as a nurse. Alice was the first patient to die in Stella’s care, an experience that reaffirmed her will to work in end-of-life care.

Peace Lilies can bloom at low light and in crowded pots. A subdued flower that contents itself with little, it felt like an appropriate pick for Alice. As for the choice of a hedgehog for the animal representing her, we felt it got across her gentleness while foreshadowing how dementia would later make her lash out at Stella.[1]
